History

Rural Wageningen Foundation is in a long line of organizing activities for students in Wageningen. Already in 1978 the so called 'Themagroep Regionale Ontwikkeling' (In English: Thematic Group on Regional Development) was founded. Reasons that day were a lack of interdisciplinarity and the idea to involve citizens in planning processes. In 2000 Stichting RUW originated as a result of the fusion of the earlier mentioned Themagroep Regionale Ontwikkeling and the 'Themagroep Landbouw en Milieu' (In English: Thematic Group on Agriculture and Environment), which organized all kinds of activities on for example alternatives for industrialized agriculture. The aim of TLM was to show that agriculture means not only scaling up and increasing of production, but also other developments, as for example bio farming. These groups may not exist anymore, the ideas of interdisciplinair, bottom up and practice based working and thinking are still alive. In a world where everything seems to be about speeding up and increasing everything possible the message of staying close to practice and reality is more valuable than ever.
